If you can buy just one Paula’s Choice product to add to your acne-fighting routine, make it the Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant. This is personally one of my favorite products for keeping my skin clear, and is one of the company’s best-sellers for people looking to tackle all forms of breakouts, including blackheads, whiteheads, and more.

This super popular product contains a 2% concentration of salicylic acid, a scientifically-backed beta hydroxy acid. This chemical exfoliant is oil-soluble, and is able to deeply penetrate the pores to clear away dirt, dead skin cells, and excess debris. It also works on the surface of the skin, helping to diminish the appearance of hyperpigmentation and smooth fine lines and wrinkles. With consistent use, pores become more refined, and the complexion becomes clearer and more even.

While the salicylic acid is definitely the star of the product, what also makes this formula stand out is the addition of green tea. Green tea has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, and can soothe irritation while providing anti-aging benefits.

Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant Pros:

  • Formulated with salicylic acid, which is great for minimizing acne.
  • Only a small amount is needed, so the bottle lasts a long time.
  • Fragrance-free, vegan, and cruelty-free formula.

Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant Cons:

  • Potentially irritating for those with more sensitive skin.

Best On a Budget:

Active Ingredient: Benzoyl Peroxide 5.0% (anti-acne); Other Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Propylene Glycol, Bisabolol, Allantoin, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Sodium Citrate, Laureth-4, Caprylyl Glycol, Sodium Hydroxide, Disodium EDTA, Hexylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol

For those trying to keep costs down while still creating an effective anti-acne routine, the Clear Extra Strength Daily Skin Clearing Treatment with 5% Benzoyl Peroxide is an excellent choice. This budget-friendly treatment contains a potent 5% concentration of benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide is excellent for breakout-prone skin, because it kills acne-causing bacteria while also getting rid of pore-clogging debris and excess oil.

Benzoyl peroxide can be harsh on the skin, but this oil-free formula contains added plant extracts that work to quell irritation and redness. Allantoin soothes and lightly moisturizes, while bisabolol further calms the skin.

This simple yet effective acne treatment is a favorite among Paula’s Choice customers. As one reviewer notes, “This product has been a lifesaver for my adult acne…It has helped heal the acne I already had, and so far my breakouts have decreased by at least 80%.”

Clear Extra Strength Daily Skin Clearing Treatment Pros:

  • Contains a highly effective concentration of benzoyl peroxide.
  • Oil-free, fragrance-free, vegan, and cruelty-free formula.

Clear Extra Strength Daily Skin Clearing Treatment Cons:

  • Benzoyl peroxide can be drying.

Ingredient Callouts

Non-Comedogenic

Paula’s Chocie is made with 100% non-comedogenic ingredients.

Salicylic Acid 0.5%, Water (Aqua), Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Acrylates/Steareth-20 Methacrylate Copolymer, Glycerin, PEG-200 Hydrogenated Glyceryl Palmate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Arginine, Butylene Glycol, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Panthenol (Vitamin B5), Disodium EDTA, Citric Acid, PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Sodium Citrate, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Chlorphenesin.

I’ve found the Clear Pore Normalizing Cleanser to be one of my favorite cleansers for controlling breakouts. It effectively cleanses the face and fights acne, but doesn’t dry out the skin or cause irritation.

The key ingredient in this Paula’s Choice cleanser is the salicylic acid, of which there is a 0.5% concentration. Since this isn’t a leave-on treatment, it isn’t going to have as dramatic of an effect as other salicylic acid options on this list (like the Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant). That said, it’s still an expertly formulated cleanser that will work to promote a clearer complexion.

This gel cleanser also contains glycerin, which helps the skin retain moisture. Panthenol (also known as provitamin B5) works alongside the glycerin to increase skin hydration and calm the complexion.

Clear Pore Normalizing Cleanser Pros:

  • Contains a low salicylic acid concentration that won’t irritate the skin.
  • Fragrance-free, vegan, and cruelty-free formula.

Clear Pore Normalizing Cleanser Cons:

  • Not a suitable option for dry skin types.

Best Serum:
Paula’s Choice – 10% Niacinamide Booster

The 10% Niacinamide Booster is another one of my favorite Paula’s Choice products, and is one of the best serums for targeting a host of issues that those with acne-prone skin tend to deal with.

Niacinamide (which is a form of vitamin B3) is a gentle multi-tasking ingredient that addresses a wide range of skin concerns. It has been shown to reduce the appearance of large pores, promote a more even skin tone, smooth fine lines and wrinkles, and even help calm the skin. Niacinamide may also play a role in lessening breakouts.

In addition to the 10% concentration of niacinamide, this lightweight serum contains allantoin and licorice extract, which soothe irritation. Vitamin C also works to brighten the complexion and provide anti-aging benefits.

10% Niacinamide Booster Pros:

  • Multi-tasking serum is easy to layer with many other skincare products, and can be used daily.
  • Lightweight formula is fragrance-free and oil-free

10% Niacinamide Booster Cons:

  • Some people have sensitivity to niacinamide, which may present as temporary flushing.

Best Retinol:
Paula’s Choice – Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment

This retinol treatment is ideal for anyone looking for a potent solution to fight signs of aging, minimize breakouts, and improve skin tone. This formula is made to be even better with the addition of soothing and hydrating ingredients.

If you’ve ever considered adding a retinol to your routine, I highly recommend taking a look at the Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment. As you may already know, retinol is one of the best ingredients for softening fine lines and wrinkles and diminishing age spots. However, it also unclogs pores, which makes it great for fighting breakouts. The ingredient is also effective at minimizing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

What makes this retinol formula really stand out is the addition of calming and hydrating ingredients that help counteract some of the side effects of retinol. Licorice and oat extracts minimize redness and soothe irritation, while ingredients like glycerin and sodium hyaluronate improve hydration. Vitamin C also provides an extra anti-aging and brightening boost.

Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment Pros:

  • Potent concentration of retinol that targets breakouts and signs of aging.
  • Lightweight and fragrance-free formula.
  • Vegan and cruelty-free

Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment Cons:

  • May cause irritation and/or dryness.

Best Mask:

I’ve found the Clear Purifying Clay Mask to be a super beneficial addition to my anti-acne routine, because it tackles blemishes with a variety of different ingredients. The first is salicylic acid, which dissolves clogs in the pores, helping to refine their appearance while fighting acne. At the same time, three types of clays draw out excess oil and debris to further decongest the skin.

As these ingredients get to work, a variety of plant-derived extracts soothe and hydrate. Green tea, willowherb, and chamomile quell irritation and provide antioxidant benefits. Red algae and green apple extracts also help improve the skin’s hydration.

Clear Purifying Clay Mask Pros:

  • A blend of effective ingredients work together to draw out impurities and diminish breakouts.
  • Formulated with hydrating and calming ingredients.
  • Fragrance-free, vegan, and cruelty-free.

Clear Purifying Clay Mask Cons:

  • May cause dryness or irritation.

Finding a moisturizer that’s both lightweight and suitable for acne-prone skin can be a challenge, but the Clear Oil-Free Moisturizer checks both boxes. The oil-free formula adequately moisturizes the skin, but is free of ingredients known to cause breakouts. It’s also non-greasy, helping to improve hydration without feeling uncomfortable on the face.

This formula features ceramides, which strengthen the skin’s barrier and improve hydration. Niacinamide works to refine the pores, calm the complexion, and improve skin tone. At the same time, antioxidant-rich blueberry extract protects the skin against free radicals, while pumpkin defends against moisture loss.

Clear Oil-Free Moisturizer Pros:

  • Lightweight yet deeply moisturizing with beneficial soothing and antioxidant benefits.
  • Oil-free, fragrance-free, cruelty-free, and vegan formula.

Clear Oil-Free Moisturizer Cons:

Many acneic skin-friendly moisturizers are more suited for oily skin, but the Water-Infusing Electrolyte Moisturizer is specifically made for breakout-prone complexions that need extra moisture. While it’s lightweight like the Clear Oil-Free Moisturizer, it contains a greater concentration of ingredients that improve skin hydration levels.

The formula features mineral electrolytes (including magnesium PCA, potassium PCA, and calcium PCA), ceramides, and glycerin, which replenish the barrier and seal moisture into the skin.

In addition to these ingredients, the moisturizer contains antioxidant-rich extracts, including wild cherry fruit extract, apple fruit extract, and mangosteen peel extract. These work to nourish the skin and protect it against damaging free radicals.

Water-Infusing Electrolyte Moisturizer Pros:

  • Rich in ingredients that seal in moisture without causing breakouts, including electrolytes and ceramides.

This spray is formulated with a 2% concentration of salicylic acid, which effectively unclogs pores to treat and prevent breakouts. Licorice root, panthenol, sodium hyaluronate, and additional ingredients help soothe the affected area.

While the product is expertly formulated for acneic skin, the real highlight is the method of application. Since it comes in a spray, it’s much easier to access hard-to-reach areas of the body (like the back). It makes clearing acne from head-to-toe a breeze.
