Treating blackheads can be a challenge, but for the best results, you need to start with a good cleanser. While a cleanser alone isn’t going to completely get rid of blackheads, an effective formula will start to decongest the pores while clearing away debris to allow your treatments to work their magic. If you’re ready to achieve a clearer complexion, I’ve compiled a list of the absolute best face cleansers for blackheads.
How I Reviewed Each Product
In order to best recommend products that genuinely work, each of the cleansers mentioned below have been tested by either me or another member of the GoodGlow team. I also referenced product reviews to get a greater sense of what works best for a larger sample.
Each cleanser recommended below is formulated with science-backed ingredients that decongest pores, minimize breakouts, and support general skin health. Keep in mind that, in order to effectively treat blackheads, you’ll need a multi-pronged approach. While each of the cleansers can help clear and prevent blackheads, you’ll also want to add other topical products into your routine for the best results.

It’s also vegan and cruelty-free, and made without additives that can aggravate sensitive skin, such as fragrances and dyes.
This creamy cleanser contains 16 powerful botanical ingredients, and is designed to dissolve buildup and decongest pores while refining their appearance. This cleanser also features kaolin clay, which absorbs excess sebum and impurities to further refine the pores and fight blemishes. Of course, the key ingredient in this cleanser is hyaluronic acid. This ingredient attracts moisture to the skin and locks it in to improve hydration levels. The formula also features vitamins A and E, which both provide potent antioxidant benefits, helping to defend the skin against damaging free radicals. Panthenol (AKA provitamin B5), chamomile flower extract, and papaya fruit extract – all of which have anti-inflammatory properties – soothe skin irritation, promoting a calmer and more comfortable complexion.

What Causes Blackheads?
Blackheads are a type of non-inflammatory acne that occurs when the pores become clogged with excess oil and dead skin cells that haven’t pushed through to the skin’s surface to shed properly.
This mixture eventually hardens inside the pore, creating a stiff plug with a tip that’s exposed to the environment.
Once that happens, the tip will then oxidize and turn black. This is why blackheads are dark in color and often referred to as “open comedones.”
However, if you’ve ever squeezed a blackhead, you have probably noticed that the rest of the plug is white or yellowish, depending on how long it’s been in the pore.
Blackheads can be caused by several different factors, which include:
Oily Skin
As we already mentioned, excess oil that gets stuck inside a pore and forms a stiff plug is the main cause of blackheads, which makes those with oily skin more prone to developing this type of acne.
Oily skin is characterized by enlarged pores and a greasy feeling on the face. Those with oily skin tend to produce more oil than those with normal or dry skin, which can cause the pores to expand and get clogged more easily.
Oily skin can be genetic, hormonal, or a product of the environment. Environmental causes of oily skin often include not washing your face well enough, not removing makeup thoroughly, using very harsh and drying cosmetics which strip the skin of its natural oil and cause it to produce more to compensate for the dryness, and using incorrect skincare products for your skin type.
Comedogenic Ingredients in Cosmetic Products
Comedogenic ingredients in skincare and makeup products are another common factor that cause blackheads.
Some ingredients, such as heavy emollients, silicones, and occlusives found in moisturizers, foundations, concealers, powders, etc., tend to fill the pores and cause clogs that can prevent the natural oil from underneath to travel to the skin’s surface where it will lubricate the skin and prevent it from becoming dry.
This can then lead to a buildup of oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria inside the pore which can eventually form a blackhead.
Additionally, some of these ingredients can be difficult to wash off because they are highly resistant to surfactants in cleansers, so even if you are diligent in removing your makeup at night, the pore can still become clogged and form a blackhead because the clogging ingredients are still present on the skin.
Dirty Pillowcases
Dirty pillowcases are another common factor that causes blackheads because they often have accumulated oils from our hair and face and waxy particles from softeners that remain on the fabric after washing and eventually lead to clogs, plugs, and blackheads.
Therefore, changing your pillowcases regularly and washing them with natural ingredients such as apple cider vinegar or lemon juice instead of fabric softeners is important.
Diet
Diet might sound like an unlikely factor that causes blackheads, but it can actually play an important role in their formation.
Eating foods high in sugar and dairy can cause inflammation, which can trigger certain hormones into overreaction.
This hormonal overreaction can affect the oil glands, which are directly regulated by hormones and are responsible for producing a healthy amount of skin oil to lubricate the skin and prevent it from drying out. Hormonal overreaction can often lead to overactive sebaceous glands that pump more oil, which forms clogs inside the pores.
Therefore, a healthy and balanced diet rich in nutrients, antioxidants, and healthy fats is essential for keeping the skin healthy and preventing blackheads.

Other Environmental Factors
Environmental factors such as air pollution is another, often overlooked, factor in blackhead formation.
Air pollutants contain particles known as free radicals, which are unstable molecules that degrade vital parts of cells, including their membranes, proteins, and DNA, by stealing their electrons through a process called oxidation.
This action will then go on to cause irregularities in skin function and appearance, including premature wrinkles and uneven skin tone, but also slow down the natural shedding process of the skin cells, causing them to become trapped inside the pores and forming a plug which will then lead to a blackhead.
What Is a Good Skincare Routine for Blackheads?
A good skincare routine for blackheads entails mitigating the damage caused by common blackhead triggers.
This includes paying attention to your hygiene practices and making sure your skin is thoroughly cleansed and the buildup of oil is reduced, changing your pillowcases regularly to make sure they don’t accumulate old dirt, and wearing sunscreen or relying on antioxidant ingredients in skincare products to scavenge free radicals and improve skin function.
Additionally, introducing an active component into your skincare routine that can directly dissolve the clogs and minimize the appearance of blackheads is also recommended.
Examples of these active ingredients include exfoliating acids, which help encourage the shedding of skin cells, thus minimizing the potential for them to become trapped inside the pores and breaking down the oil that has accumulated inside the pores, causing a blackhead.
Can a Cleanser Really Remove Blackheads?
Cleansers are an effective way to remove blackheads because they contain surfactants, which are ingredients that help dissolve impurities that have accumulated on the skin’s surface, keep the skin clear and free of oil and cellular buildup, and dissolve the plugs inside the pores that will eventually turn into blackheads and pimples if not washed off.
What Makes a Face Wash Good for Removing Blackheads?
Any regular cleanser will do a good job of keeping your skin clean and free from daily impurities that have accumulated on its surface due to environmental pollutants, oil, cosmetics, and other factors.
However, when selecting a cleanser that will help remove blackheads, you need to opt for something with an active ingredient such as salicylic acid.
Salicylic acid is an oil-soluble substance, which means it can dissolve oil and break down the plugs inside the pores, which are responsible for blackhead formation.
Therefore, when choosing a cleanser to target this specific skin concern, you need to make sure it contains the ingredients that can help fight the causing factor in order to achieve the desired results.
Best Skincare Routine For Blackheads
Besides having a good cleanser that will help target the concern at hand, it’s always a good idea to have a well-rounded routine that will nourish your skin and maintain its health.
Here are a few other skincare products to consider including in your skincare routine when dealing with blackheads:
Face Masks
Face masks that contain active ingredients such as exfoliating acids can be another great addition to your skincare routine when aiming to remove blackheads.
A mask treatment can be done once to twice a week to maintain the results from your main active ingredients and promote healthy, even, and clear skin.
Retinol
Adding retinol to your skincare routine can also help remove blackheads as the active component in these products, vitamin A, helps encourage faster cellular turnover, which will prevent dead skin cells from getting stuck inside the pores and accelerate the formation of blackheads.
Moisturizer
A hydrating moisturizer is another essential product to include in your routine, as it will help keep the skin hydrated and prevent dryness or irritation from active ingredients.
Hydrating your skin with a moisturizer will prevent the sebaceous glands from producing excess oil to compensate for any dryness, leading to balanced, clear, and healthy skin.
Sunscreen
Protecting your skin from UV-induced damage and free radical proliferation is also important, and you can easily do this by applying mineral-based sunscreens such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.
These filters will form a physical barrier on your skin that will repel most environmental pollutants, protecting your skin from abnormalities, such as chain reactions caused by free radicals that can lead to blackheads.
Is it Safe to Remove Blackheads With Tools?
Blackheads can also safely be removed at home by using special tools to extract the impurities that have accumulated inside the pores.
The best way to use blackhead extracting tools is to cleanse and steam the skin, as this will help loosen the pores and make the extraction process easier and less uncomfortable, especially for those with sensitive and reactive skin.
These tools can be used once to twice a week, as long as it is done gently and with care.
Will Blackheads Go Away on Their Own?
Unfortunately, blackheads don’t usually go away on their own, and they have a high chance of turning into inflamed pimples if not removed for a long time.
The clogs that form blackheads consist of cellular debris, which some strains of bacteria use as food to grow and proliferate.
One of these strains includes the acne-causing bacteria, which, with enough proliferation, can result in a full-blown inflamed pimple at the spot where the blackhead used to be.
Therefore, when you start noticing blackheads, this is a sign that you need to make some changes, whether it’s to your skincare routine or lifestyle, but, in most cases, it should be both.
Ingredients to Avoid When Dealing With Blackheads
As we already mentioned, some ingredients found in cosmetic products many of us use daily can be the causing factor of blackheads.
Therefore, here are a few ingredients to avoid when dealing with blackheads:
- Silicones – Dimethicone, Cyclomethicone, Cetearyl methicone, Cyclopentasiloxane, etc.
- Stearates – Isopropyl myristate, Isostearyl isostearate, Myristyl myristate, Stearic acid, etc.
- Heavy emollients – Petrolatum, Lanolin, Beeswax, Mineral oil, Cocoa butter, etc.
- Oils – Coconut oil, Vegetable oil, Wheatgerm oil, Palm oil, Soybean oil, etc.
Best Ingredients for Blackheads
Similarly, the way some ingredients can exacerbate blackheads, others can help combat them.
Therefore, here are the best ingredients to help remove blackheads:
- Salicylic acid – An oil-soluble component that dissolves accumulated debris inside the pores.
- Benzoyl peroxide – An oxygenating agent that helps reduce bacterial overgrowth inside the pores.
